A Journey Sparked by Chinese Novels
Understanding China Through Its 707 Cities—One Weekly Expedition Until 2038
A project so obsessive, only 0.0001% of subscribers will follow it to 2038.
The Genesis: When Fiction Revealed the Operating System
What began as late-night reading became an obsession: these novels weren’t just stories, but blueprints waiting to be mapped.
For two years, I devoured Chinese urban novels — clunky, awkward, sometimes unintentionally hilarious. But beneath the broken grammar and cliché plot twists was something astonishing:
They weren’t fiction. They were field manuals.
《逆袭风云录》 showed how a small-town official climbs the ladder — via 3 am phone calls, tea-house whispers, and hospital photo-ops.
《冯先生》 revealed the rhythms of innovation — how AI breakthroughs depend as much on talent as on whose niece needs an internship.
These weren’t just stories. They were narrative back-doors into China’s decision-making code. Through them, I downloaded the logic of a civilization.
So on July 2, 2025, I’m launching China in 5: A weekly dissection of all 707 Chinese cities, one city at a time, for 13.6 straight years.
The Mission: 707 Cities in 13.6 Years
What began as literary obsession became a life’s work:
707 cities. 1 per week. 714 weeks.
We’re launching China in 5 — a long-form urban decoding project, one city per week, structured across 21 seasons. Not journalism. Not tourism. This is civilization preservation.
The Method: Our 5×5 Documentary Framework
Each week delivers:
🔍 3 Deep-Dive Articles: Power, Systems, Human Lives
🎬 1 Mini Documentary: With timestamps for real-world rhythm
We map each city across 5 Dimensions:

Proving novels foresaw what economists missed
"Cities are living organisms. We’re just their scribes."
This isn’t journalism. This is time-travel anthropology.
We’re building the Rosetta Stone for 22nd-century urban archaeologists.
